![]() ![]() oh, death come close my eyes BACKGROUNDtw: coerced sex (does not occur but is threatened) In the world of Ravat, religion is a tricky subject. Magic is just another science, after all, and most people have some simple powers that make life easier. If you asked an average Ravatan if they believed in the gods, they'd probably roll their eyes. Sure, the gods exist - they're just pretentious elitist scholars who think their unique powers mean they're entitled to worship and praise. More devout people whisper that they've unlocked the secrets of immortality, but there's no actual proof, and so many Ravatans don't believe. Kavi was different. Born into a family of worshippers, she was taught from a young age that the gods were to be respected, adored, loved. It was, after all, the unique powers of the gods that allowed them to live their lives. How else would they eat without the God of the Harvest, or rest without the Goddess of Sleep? Kavi ate it all up. When she was barely twelve, she left school behind to start working at the temple for Bhaskar, the God of Light. For fifteen years, she performed ceremonies and rituals, organized festivals, developed the shrine into the largest temple in Ravat. Bhaskar was her life, her every waking moment. And then she became high priestess, and Bhaskar became even more. She worked for him all day, and at night, he'd visit her in her dreams. He spoke to her with honey in his voice and Kavi - sweet, faithful, naïve Kavi - hung on his every word. It's a stormy summer night when he walks into her dreams for the last time. His voice is still sweet, but what he asks for is clearly a demand. He wants more from her - all of her. She hesitates. Bhaskar is her life, but hardly her love, and she knows what she's been taught. Kavi refuses, and everything changes. She doesn't remember the process itself. All she knows is waking up in Diyulo, the domain of the gods, with something rushing in her veins. She looks in the mirror and her face has changed - sharper angles, darker eyes, black teardrop shapes in a line down her cheeks. Kavi has been made divine. Bhaskar knew how to hurt her most. They'd spoken in her dreams of her love for her family, her friends, her duties. He'd taken that all from her - divinity came with rules. She could appear to mortals, of course, but she could never tell them who she had been on Ravat. The gods had to stay separate. It was for their own good. Kavi's gotten over it, as much as she can. It's been over a hundred years, and she's watched her parents and siblings pass, every bit the punishment that Bhaskar intended. Now, all she does is throw herself into her new role, as a Goddess of Safe Passage. People fear her as a deity of death, and pray to her out of that fear - another thing that Bhaskar surely planned to hurt her - but all she really does is collect souls to set them to eternal rest. The sort of rest she'll never get to know. PERSONALITYOnce upon a time, Kavi was spirited and earnest and more than a little naïve. But she's been forcibly turned into a goddess in between then and now. The Kavi of today is quiet and solemn. She isn't burdened by her duties, but it's very important to her that she does things right, and so most of her energy is focused on her job as a deity. Some call her a workaholic, and they aren't wrong. Kavi is also a really curious person. The world has changed a lot since she was a mortal, and though she doesn't often get a chance to experience culture as a deity, she likes to spend time observing it anyway. One of her biggest hobbies is people-watching - something unusual to many of the older gods, who aren't often interested in mortal affairs. Kavi is also a stubborn person - she has a set of principles and sticks to them, no matter what. For example, she believes deeply that she only has her more powerful abilities to do her job, and so she'll never use them outside of that situation. People pray to her often to bring their loved ones back to life, or to play around with the parameters of life and death, and Kavi absolutely ignores them every time. She doesn't want to be a goddess, but as long as she is one, she might as well do it right. And despite her line of work, she loathes the idea of causing people harm. Yes, she's a pacifist goddess of death. Somehow. Her stubbornness when sticking to her morals doesn't make things easy for her, and she can be closed-off to new ideas and opportunities as a result. When it comes to her relationships with other people, Kavi doesn't trust easily. She's extremely kind and has a huge heart, most clearly seen in how she cares for the mortals who pray to her. But after everything with Bhaskar, she's over-cautious, scared of sharing that kindness with people who don't actually deserve it. She keeps her emotions for others under lock and key, and while she's not unfriendly, she definitely comes off as aloof. At her very core, Kavi is driven by making things better for other people. If she can make someone smile, or help them when they're in trouble, she will. She just has a lot of baggage that keeps her from getting close to people, and so she's not often very happy as a result. But then again, she's a goddess of death. Being solemn and gloomy is just part of the package. ABILITIES✻ Teleportation: This is how Kavi gets to the souls she needs to collect, and how she travels between the divine and mortal realms. ✻ Telekinesis: She can move simple objects - most often, this is how she transports and collects souls without having to get too close to mortals. ✻ Dream-Walking: She can visit dreams, and is sometimes dragged into them by her devotees. She could perform other magic in these dreams, but she doesn't. ✻ Soul Magic: She can soothe souls, but this works better on dead souls than live ones. On live ones, her powers extend as far as calming people down or making them sleepy. She can also manipulate souls, which again, works better on the dead than the living. If she really put her mind to it, she could control someone living's soul - but physically, it would take a lot out of her, and morally, she wouldn't. ✻ Divine Magic: Much like Bhaskar did to her, she could make someone divine. She won't - but she could. |
